At the start of World War II, Colonial Knife Co. of Providence, Rhode Island was selected by the U.S. Navy to produce a newly designed Deck Knife—the Mark 1—which quickly became standard issue for sailors serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. While it shared some similarities with other knives of the era, the Mark 1 was purpose-built for naval service, designed to handle the wide range of demanding tasks faced aboard ship during wartime. From cutting rope and rigging to handling munitions and general deck work, this knife was an essential tool. It also served in critical roles such as self-defense, survival situations, medical aid, and rescue operations—making it one of the most versatile blades issued during the war. Built for reliability and performance, the knife features hardened AISI 1075 steel, offering excellent edge retention and durability. The blade is finished with a non-reflective Parkerized “blackout” coating, reducing glare and enhancing corrosion resistance. Its razor-sharp, scalpel-style tip is optimized for precise slicing and controlled cutting. The molded polymer handle provides a secure, non-slip grip—even in wet or harsh conditions—and is designed to withstand extreme environments. In emergency situations, the knife could even be boiled for sterilization, making it suitable for field medical use. It comes complete with a secure scabbard featuring a lanyard and leg strap for dependable carry.
